2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Brake Disc Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Disc on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Before starting a brake disc service or repair, first support the vehicle, then remove the wheel and tire assembly. After that, remove the caliper so that the brake hose does not hold the caliper in place. Unbolt the steering knuckle with the caliper adapter bolts and uninstall the adapter. After that, remove the grease cap, cotter pin, nut lock, nut, washer and outer wheel bearing and then the disc from the spindle. During installation, review and possibly repack the wheel bearings and if the inner bearing was removed, install the new grease seals. If you have an ABS car, inspect the tone wheel in the disc hub for damage because it cannot be fixed on its own. Glide the hub/disc onto the spindle and then, in order, install the outer wheel bearing, a washer and the retaining nut. Apply 41 - 54 Nm (30 - 40 ft. lbs.) when tightening the nut while turning the hub/disc; after stopping, loosen the nut to take away the bearing pressure. Finger-tighten the nut, insert the nut lock and fix with a new cotter pin, so there is 0.25 - 0.076 mm (0.001-0.003 inch) of end play. Wash the grease cap, rub the cup inside with wheel bearing grease and set it in place. Following manufacturer instructions, secure the caliper adapter and tighten both the adapter bolts to 176 Nm (130 ft. lbs.) if you have an LD 1500 or 285 Nm (210 ft. lbs.) if you have a HD 2500 or 3500. Install the caliper and tighten its bolts to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.), then slide in the wheel and tire assembly and bring the vehicle down. Make sure you seat the brake shoes by applying the brakes several times, so the pedal moves securely before you move the vehicle.
