2003 Dodge Caravan Power Steering Hose Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Hose for Return Hose on 2003 Dodge Caravan?
A: Before servicing the return hose, drain the power steering fluid reservoir and use a siphon pump to get as much fluid out as you can. Exclude the vehicle and remove the front vapor emissions canister, making sure there is an oil drain pan ready under it. Cut the strap that holds the heat sleeve onto the return hose close to the power steering pump and pull back the sleeve to view the clamp. Get rid of the clamp and after that, disconnect the return hose from the pump. Then, take off the bolts holding the power steering cooler to the cradle crossmember reinforcement and the bolts of the routing clamps to the suspension cradle and free the return hose from the clamps. Undo the nut of the return hose tube on the power steering gear and pull out the hose. During installation, remove used O-rings from the ends of the power steering hose and wipe the hose, pump and gear ports with a clean towel. At the power steering gear end of the return hose, insert a new O-ring, moistened with clean power steering fluid. Keep the ends of the tube from being bent when you install it, to avoid leaks or blockages. If a new return hose does not have an insulating heat sleeve, use the heat shield from the original hose. Stretch the hose along the rear of the cradle crossmember and drop the gear end into the gear port on the bottom side. Attach the hose to the suspension cradle crossmember using the clamps that come with the car. Be sure to tighten both end bolts to 23 Nm (200 in. lbs.) torque. After that, tighten the return hose tube nut at the power steering gear port to 275 in-lbs./31 Nm torque. Place the fluid cooler about the cradle crossmember reinforcement and fasten it using bolts tightened to a torque of 11 Nm (100 in. lbs.). Make sure that there is a gap between the power steering fluid hoses and both the exhaust system and other harmful surfaces. Place the pump end of the hose above the crossmember straight toward the pump, keep it free of bends and hook the return hose onto the pump's return fitting, securing it with a hose clamp tightened to 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.). Slide the protective heat shield sleeve all the way down the rubber hose, then put the heat shield over the tie-strap at the hose clamp and secure it. After you reinstall the front vapor canister, drive the vehicle up so all its fluids are drained, refill everything and check for problems.
