How to Remove and Install Drive Belts on 5.9L Diesel Engines with a Spring-Loaded Automatic Belt Tensioner on 2003 Dodge Ram 2500?

All versions of 5.9L diesel engines have a spring-loaded belt tensioner that works for all belt setups, be they without air conditioning or not. To begin, connect a 1/2 inch drive-length handle ratchet to the 1/2 inch square hole in the tensioner and rotate both in the same direction until the tension is gone. First, remove the belt from the pulley and then pull the belt out of the car. Make sure the belt moves correctly so the water pump doesn't lead to the engine overheating. Lift the belt over all but the pump pulley, attach a 1/2 inch ratchet to the tensioner and then turn the ratchet clockwise. Draw the belt over the water pump pulley and then pull the tensioner chain back to where it belonged before removing the ratchet, so the belt is correctly aligned on all the pulleys.
