2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Thermostat Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Thermostat on a 5.9L Diesel Engine on 2003 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: When servicing a 5.9L diesel engine's thermostat, place the draincock in its locked position, because hot and pressurized coolant can cause severe burns if you leave it loose. Empty the coolant into a tidy container if it doesn't look dirty, then disconnect the battery negative cables. Keep draining until you can see below the top of the thermostat. Before beginning any work, wear safety glasses and use the tool designed for servicing constant tension hose clamps-the special clamp tool (number 6094) or the Snap-On clamp tool (number HPC-20). In case you need new constant tension clamps, only use ones with a tongue that shows the same original equipment number or letter. Pull off the clip at the radiator hose and remove the radiator hose, then unscrew the three bolts from the water outlet to take it apart from the cylinder head. Wipe clean the place where the water outlet connector attaches and the top of the thermostat housing with your brush or wet towel. If the thermostat's gasket seal has cuts or nicks, you should replace it. Place the thermostat into the groove in the cylinder head and then set in place the thermostat housing and the bolts, tightening them to 10 Nm (88 in. lbs.). Install the radiator upper hose and clamp, refill the cooling system with a proper antifreeze and plug the negative cables back to the battery. Afterward, start the car to find out if the coolant is leaking and if the thermostat is operating correctly.
