2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Harmonic Balancer and Crankshaft Pulley on 2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: The first step is to disconnect the negative battery cable and take off the accessory drive belt. Put in the retaining lock for the crankshaft/ring gear, then remove the bolt and washer in the crankshaft center. If the bolt on the belt pulley/vibration damper is very tight, take off the belt pulley with puller #8940. Check that both ends of the puller fit perfectly into the slots of the belt pulley, without tilting. If you find wear grooves on the pulley or vibration damper after removing it, change both the pulley/damper and the front crankshaft seal. For settlement, place the parallel key next to the shaft key and secure it with grease until they are aligned. Fix the belt pulley/vibration damper and attach the crankshaft center bolt and washer, tighten the M8.8 bolt to 200 Nm (148 ft. lbs.) and additional 90° or the M10.9 bolt to 325 Nm (240 ft. lbs.) followed by 90°. Take the retaining lock off for the crankshaft/ring gear, examine the accessory drive belt for wear and change it if it's needed, finally loop in the accessory drive belt and finish things by connecting the negative battery cable. Keep far from the fan, pulleys or belts when the engine runs and make sure you aren't wearing loose clothing. Once you finish, drive the vehicle to check for leaks at all the usual points.
