2004 Chrysler Concorde Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Maintain a Catalytic Converter on 2004 Chrysler Concorde?
A: Before servicing your catalytic converter, allow the exhaust system to cool down because it gets very hot while running. First, disconnect the negative battery cable at the remote jumper terminal on the right strut tower, then lift the car on a hoist and remove the whole exhaust system. Drop the car, disconnect the Inlet Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor, loosen the clamp on the air inlet hose and detach the make-up air hose from the right cover of the head. First, remove the air cleaner assembly with its hose, then take out the right frame rail/shock tower ground cable and finally take off the air cleaner resonator support bracket on the right cylinder head. Disconnect the plug going to the downstream oxygen sensor and take out the oxygen sensor from the converter pipe, then make sure you remove and discard the exhaust manifold V-Band clamp. Lift the car once more and remove the nut that holds the right catalytic converter hanger bracket to the transaxle bracket. Put jack stands on the front part of the engine cradle on both sides and place a transmission jack under the transmission oil pan. Turn the front engine cradle bolts a few times counterclockwise and get rid of the rear cradle bolts. Lower the rear of the cradle 76 mm (3 in.) using the transmission jack to open room for removing the catalytic converter. To make things easier, a person can be under the vehicle to guide the catalytic converter as it is rotated and pulled upward from the top part of the engine compartment. Install the V-Band clamp on the exhaust manifold outlet without fastening the T-bolt and a helpful assistant can still guide the catalytic converter into place. Join the converter to the main tube with the T-Bolt and attach the attaching point to the hanger. Install the right catalytic converter hanger bracket to the transaxle bracket by hand, lift the engine cradle slightly in the air with the transmission jack until it touches the vehicle and restore the two cradle bolt torque values for both up and down cradle brackets. Once you've removed the jack stands and transmission jack, lower the car down to the ground, check its alignment and make sure everything below and above the transmission is clear. After fastening the clamp to 100 in. lbs. (11 Nm), attach the downstream oxygen sensor and electrical socket, fit the air cleaner bracket over the right cylinder head, connect the ground strap under the right frame rail/shock tower, complete the air cleaner installation, join the air hose to your right-hand cylinder head, tighten the hose clamp securing the throttle body hose, install the IAT Sensor into the connector, raise the vehicle on a hoist, torque the right catalytic converter hanger bracket to the transaxle bracket to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.), install the exhaust system, lower the vehicle, and finally connect the negative battery cable.
