2005 Chrysler 300 Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install the Rear Drive Shaft on 2005 Chrysler 300?
A: Since over-angulation when installing the rear propeller shaft can cause vibrations or component damage, it is recommended to do this task with two people present. If you take off the coupler or damper for a V6 model, match the marks on the block to those on the bellhousing and reinstall, so the sleeve (2) is in place. Fasten three bolts with washers and nuts on them and tighten them to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Standing beside your assistant, slide the propeller shaft onto the axle at the right height, using the index marks to find the proper placement. Together, tighten the rear coupler-to-axle flange bolt/nuts by hand without using a torque wrench at this time. Afterward, align the propeller shaft on the transmission flange to the removed index marks and place and install the front coupler bolt and its nuts by hand only. Instead of tightening, just loosely insert the center bearing-to-body bolts at this point. First, set the torque on the front coupler-to-transmission flange bolt/nuts to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.), then do the same on the rear coupler-to-axle flange bolts. You should put the rear suspension to ride height with jack stands (2) so that the center bearing is not secured until you're ready to avoid making noise and prematurely wearing the bearing. After the suspension is compressed, use a torque wrench to tighten the center bearing-to-body bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Then put on the heat shield (1), the rear exhaust system (2) and the crossmember (1).
