Q: How to Service and Repair a Shock Absorber in the Rear Suspension Strut on 2005 Dodge Stratus?
A: Open the rear part of the vehicle and access the nuts that connect the upper mount of the rear shock to the vehicle beneath it. Peel back the area of carpet on the rear shock tower, remove the top cover from the shock assembly and remove the two screws holding the shock assembly upper mount/spring seat to the tower. Put the car on jackstands or a frame contact type hoist and then take off the rear wheel and tire unit. separates the two screws connecting the splash shield to the top mount of the shock assembly and unbolts the shock absorber from the knuckle at the rear. Gently press the suspension located at the rear and, after lifting the top of the shock, pull it out of the knuckle through the top of the wheel opening. When disassembling, use the Pentastar Service Equipment tool W-7200 to compress the coil spring and make sure you do not remove the shock rod nut before the spring is factory compressed. If you have to change both shocks at the same time, mark the coil spring and spring assembly. Install the shock assembly inside the compressor, press the coil spring and hold the shock rod with A136 while you unscrew the retainer nut. Take out the retainer washer for the upper shock rod bushing, then remove the upper mount, rod isolator bushings, the isolator for the upper spring, the lower washer for the shock rod, the dust shield and the cup. Spring out the clamp to get the coil spring loose and then pull out all four parts: the shock absorber, lower spring isolator, jounce bumper and collar. Check over all parts for any damage and replace them if they are not good. Once the compressor drive is set back, it's safe to remove the coil spring and release the tension. Set the lower edge of the coil spring in the compressor and then place the upper hooks where they go. Then use the compressor to shorten the coil and set the shock absorber and upper mount back in place. Attach both shock rod isolator bushings, the isolator sleeve, lower coil spring isolator, the jounce bumper and collar. Place the shock spring through the coil, install the dust shield and cup, slide down the bushing retainer washer, insert the upper spring isolator and add the upper shock mount bracket with rod isolator bushings. Use your Snap-On A136 with a crow foot wrench to tighten the retainer nut to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) on the shock assembly. Position the upper mount above the shock absorber lower bracket, let go of the coil spring tension and lift the shock out of the compressor. Add the shock assembly to the vehicle, fit the upper shock mount into the rear shock tower and screw in the clevis bracket on the knuckle until torque reaches 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Uncover the trunk, then tighten the two shock assembly upper mounting nuts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Cover the trunk, put in the carpeting and fasten on the splash shield before closing the trunk. Place the wheel and tire assembly on the car, tightening all wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) before you lower it to the ground.
