2006 Dodge Grand Caravan Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: How Do Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves Impact the Machining and Inspection of Valve Seats on 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Certain angles are given to the valves and seats of the engine during their machining. After the valves are refaced, check the remaining margin around them. Using the proper size guiding pin for reseating stones is necessary when refacing valve seats to ensure the valve surface meets its true requirements. Set a dial indicator on the valve and check that its runout does not go beyond 0.051 mm (0.002 inch) total indicator reading. Coat the valve seat with Prussian blue to check where the valves touch; light coat the valve seat and set the valve, using little pressure to rotate it. If blue shows up in the middle of the valve face, there is sufficient contact. Should it move to the upper side, lower the seat with a 15-degree stone; if on the lower side, survive the seat with a 65-degree stone. If the correct insertion angle and width are kept up, worn or burned valve seats can be reworked; any other case requires a new cylinder head. The width of intake and exhaust seats should fall between 1.50 and 2.00 mm (0.059 - 0.078 inch). After finishing the valve seats or faces, insert the valve into the cylinder head and measure from its tip to the spring seat. Reach and grind the cooling tip until it is thin enough without visible scoring and chamfer it again if there are any indications of possible seal damage. Once the valve and seat are refaced, measure the height of the valve spring from the top of the seat to the bottom portion of the retainer. For any height over 4.160 inches, insert a 0.794 mm (0.0312 inch) spacer into the head counterbore to lower the spring's height.
