- Q: How to Remove an Axle Shaft on Dodge Challenger?A:If you do not have a hoist, use screw-style under-hoist jack stands and raise the rear suspension before you remove the half shaft. Put a 14mm hex on axle drain plug 1 and remove it. Pour out the rear axle fluid. Reinstall the axle drain plug and tighten it to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.). Subsequently, get rid of the rear exhaust system and move the wheel/tire assembly from the side where you will remove the shaft. Do not use wheel hub nut 1 and instead mark propeller shaft rubber coupler 1 and axle flange 2 with alignment index marks 3. Unfasten the three propeller shaft coupler-to-axle flange bolt/nuts, then use a suitable screwdriver 1 to partially remove the halfshaft coupler from the axle assembly. When handling a drive-on hoist, the jack 1 goes behind the rear axle assembly; for other hoists, compress the rear suspension before setting up jack 1 on the vehicle. Disconnect isolator 1 by undoing the single bolt or nut 2 at the rear axle forward mount and then remove the two bolts connecting the rear axles to the crossmember 1 using a short socket and a flexible-head ratchet. Slowly place the rear axle on the ground, keeping the propeller shaft elevated by strong rope or wire 1. Raise your vehicle just a bit so the axle drops a little, then take out one halfshaft, making room to remove the second while supporting the axle seal and journal with your fingers. Be gentle with the halfshaft parts, especially the boots and correct any bent slingers to keep them away from the axle seal rubber. Remove the halfshaft from the hub, check rubber isolation washer 1 and get rid of it if its rubber is damaged. Then do the same for the other side if required. In the end, use a suitable screwdriver to take out axle seals 2.
- Q: How to Install the Axle Shaft on Dodge Challenger?A:Before adding the halfshaft, take out the axle seals by using Installer 9223. Insert the hub nut and the halfshaft isolation washer which move in both directions and ensure you use a new hub nut, as the original is intended for just one use. Install one halfshaft into the wheel hub/knuckle assembly and manually screw in the new hub nut. Check the slinger for damage and fix it if it is not straight so it won't touch the axle seal. Keep the halfshaft installation angle small so as not to harm the seal. Rub the inner joint bearing journal of the halfshaft with Mopar Gear and Axle Lubricant (75W-140) and push it into the rear axle assembly with new circlips to avoid damaging the axle seals. Test the installation by pulling the joint towards the inside of your house. Lift the rear axle into place, match the index marks on the propeller shaft and fasten the coupler-to-axle bolts/nuts with your hands. Attach the bolts between the axle and crossmember, tighten them to 220 Nm (162 ft. lbs.) and secure the rear axle front mount isolator, torque the bolt/nut to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.). See that the halfshaft inner joints have completely engaged with the axle assembly and after that, remove the transmission jack and any screw-type under-hoist jack stands. Join the propeller shaft coupler and the axle flange by tightening the bolt/nuts to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Open the rear axle fill plug, fill it with 1.2L (1.3 qts) of 75W-140 Synthetic Gear and Axle Lubricant, close it and tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.). Attach the exhaust, relax the vehicle, secure the halfshaft hub nut to 213 Nm (157 ft. lbs.) and fit the wheel center cap. Next, install the wheel/tire so it's aligned with the rotor and tighten the lug nuts to 150 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) before bringing the car down again.
