To mend and fix the shift cable, you should place the transmission in PARK and first lift the vehicle up. If you have an RFE transmission, unhook the cable eyelet from the lever at the transmission manual shift and unhook the cable adjuster from its bracket. Move the car lower and after removing the cloth from the expected area, remove the grommet from the dash panel. Remove any needed steering column trim, disconnect the BTSI wiring connector, unhook the cable from the lower column bracket and the shift lever pin and guide the cable through the opening along the dash into the car. You should take the gearshift cable out of the vehicle. When installing, pass the end of the gearshift cable intended for the transmission through the space in the dash where it's needed and position the cable grommet properly inside that space. Push the end of the cable into the steering column bracket until its ears click in place, then snap the other end onto the shift lever ball stud. Place the vehicle once more on the jack, put the gear stick in PARK and check that the shaft is rotated to ensure the car is in the Park gear. In vehicles with RLE or RFE transmissions, route the gearshift cable through the transmission mounting bracket and secure it by snapping both retaining ears into the transmission and the ball stud on the manual shift lever for both ends of the cable. After lowering the vehicle, press the cable adjuster lock tab downward until it clicks, test the transmission range sensor and make gearshift cable and BTSI adjustments as they are needed.
