Dodge Journey Starter supplies the initial mechanical power to turn the engine crankshaft and enable combustion. It receives electrical energy from the battery via heavy-gauge cabling and feeds that current to an attached solenoid to activate power to the Starter. When the ignition switch is in the START position, the solenoid closes the circuit, pushes the drive gear to the engine flywheel or flexplate, and energizes the Starter motor. The rotating assembly conducts a current with its brushes and commutator. An armature spins between field coils or permanent magnets inside the motor housing. The drive gear is rotated by the spinning armature, and the overrunning clutch allows the gear to automatically disengage after the engine has fired to protect the Starter from high speed. In Dodge vehicles, the Starter uses electromechanical force to produce rotating torque. The functioning of the Journey starting circuit is concerned with low-voltage battery power and safety switches that prevent engagement when the vehicle is in gear so that the Journey engine can get a reasonable amount of initial rotation. The arrangement provides dependable cold starting capability for all Dodge Journey applications.

Dodge Journey Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to Remove the Starter Motor from a 3.5L Engine on Dodge Journey?
    A:
The first thing to do when removing the starter motor from a 3.5L engine is to separate and cut off the negative Battery Cable. After that, unscrew the heat shield nuts and set the heat shield to the side. If the car has one, get rid of the belly pan. After that, get rid of the front mount bolt from the bracket and mount and then remove the bolts at the front and rear from the crossmember before getting rid of the whole crossmember. Afterward, take out the bolts from the heat shield and remove the shield. Open the Oxygen Sensor and place it aside, then remove the bolt from the transmission bracket. Take off the bolts and the transmission bracket from the housing. Disconnect the battery cable nut, ignition wire and battery cable from the starter solenoid stud and after that detach the electrical connector from the starter solenoid. Lastly, remove both the mounting bolts and ground wire and take out the starter from the transmission housing. Remove the dust cover that is over the starter motor. When the flywheel is damaged, look for any damage on the flywheel gears and welds.
  • Q:
How to Install a Starter Motor on Dodge Journey?
    A:
First, set the starter motor dust shield onto the starter before installing it. Insert the starter into the housing of the transmission, screw in the ground wire and tighten the mounting bolts to 54 Nm. Following that, push the Battery Cable, ignition wire and battery cable nut onto the starter solenoid stud and tighten the nut to 10 Nm. Screw the electrical connector into the starter solenoid, then install and hand tighten the bolts used to connect the transmission bracket to the transmission housing. Hand tighten the bolt that holds the transmission bracket. Making sure the torque sequence is followed avoids harm to the fasteners, the bracket or rack and the threaded bolt holes. Make sure these bolts are tightened to 50 Nm. After you have installed the Oxygen Sensor, tighten it to 41 Nm and the heat shield to 12 Nm. Join the transmission crossmember to the bolts and tighten them firmly to 55 Nm before turning one to 50 Nm. Fit the front mount through bolt into the transmission bracket and the mount, turning it up to 47 Nm. If your car has one, put on the belly pan, making sure the lower heat shield is attached to the lower studs first and then attach the upper heat shield on top using the lower nut. Set the heat shield over all the studs and fasten it with heat shield nuts that you tighten to 12 Nm. Following this, hook up the negative cable, tighten the nut using an 5 Nm torque wrench.
