The CV Boot found inside Dodge Magnum vehicles plays a very important role as they safeguards the Constant Velocity (CV) joints which are instrumental in transmitting power from the transaxle to the wheel assembly. This flexible rubber or plastic boot contains the required lubricant for the CV joints and at the same time, keeps contaminants from harming the joints. Various forms of CV joints are used in Dodge Magnum models, Rzeppa joints for the outer ends and tripod or double offset joints in the inboard ends. The outer joints are for angles that are larger and the inboard joints are for angles that are caused by change in length of the shaft due to movement of the suspension. The CV Boot must be checked often since CV joint deterioration may cause failure and thus produce noise, vibrations when the vehicle is running.

Dodge Magnum CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a CV Boot on Dodge Magnum?
    A:
The first step is to remove the single large boot clamp that maintains the inner tripod joint sealing boot inside the tripod joint housing, then throw it away and finally remove the small clamp that keeps the boot attached to the interconnecting shaft. Take the sealing boot off the tripod housing and lower it down the interconnecting shaft while caring that the bearings do not come loose from the spider trunions. Following this, undo the snap ring located on the spider assembly connection to the interconnecting shaft, ensuring you do not hit the outer tripod bearings. You may need to tap the spider assembly with a brass drift if it will not come off the interconnecting shaft on its own. Look at the spider assembly, tripod joint housing and interconnecting shaft for excessive damage. Any parts with obvious wear should cause the Drive Shaft assembly to be replaced, because there is no way to repair those components. To install, slide the inner tripod joint seal boot retaining clamp onto the shaft, follow with the replacement inner tripod joint boot, making sure the raised bump in the boot is positioned in the shaft's groove. Attach the spider assembly to the interconnecting shaft, making certain it is set back enough so that you can use a brass drift to put on the retaining snap ring. Put the snap ring into the groove at the end of the shaft and push it into place until it clicks. Take half the grease from the seal boot package and place it in the tripod housing and grease the rest into the sealing boot. Line up the tripod housing with the spider assembly and slider it onto the assembly and shaft that joins them. Clamp the tripod joint seal boot evenly on the sealing boot and then use Special Tool C-4975-A to clamp the sealing boot on the interconnecting shaft, so that the seal is not dented or stretched. Use a trim stick to vent the inner tripod opening slowly so as not to damage the sealing boot and always place the stick flat against the tripod housing. Set the shaft funcionnale on the tripod support, remove the part labeled "Trim Stick," and fit the trilobal boot with the tripod base by placing the lobes in the dents in the joint. The final step is to clamp the tripod joint sealing boot to the tripod joint, using one of these procedures: crimp type (C-4975-A Special Tool) for crimp models or latching type (Snap-On YA3050) for designs with latches.
