The Camshaft Position Sensor in Dodge Ram 2500 vehicles is one of the important parts of a vehicle it helps the engine control module to monitor camshaft position and speed for the controlling of the fuel injectors and ignition distribution. Normally it is secured on the surface of the camshaft, although the position of the sensor may differ depending on make and model of the vehicle. The Camshaft Position Sensor works hand in hand with the crank sensor to enable the engine to properly time engine parts and especially where there are camshafts with variable valve timing mechanisms. This simply shows that a faulty sensor is capable of compromising the performance or even make the engine not start at all, making the sensor crucial for a well functioning engine.

Dodge Ram 2500 Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Camshaft Position Sensor on a 5.7L Engine on Dodge Ram 2500?
    A:
Before installing the Camshaft Position Sensor, first clean out the machined hole on the timing gear/chain cover. After that, place sensor 2 into the timing gear/chain cover using a small back-and-forth action, so you don't twist and damage the O-ring. Before tightening the bolt, press the sensor securely against the timing gear/chain cover to avoid snapping the sensor tang. After mounting bolt 3, tighten it to 12 Nm (106 in.lbs.), then connect the electrical connector to the sensor.
  • Q: How to Remove the Camshaft Position Sensor Without Taking Out the Distributor on Dodge Ram 2500?
    A:
It is possible to take out the camshaft position sensor from the distributor without removing the whole unit. You should start by taking out the air cleaner assembly and unplugging the negative wire from the battery. Following that, unscrew the two screws on the distributor cap to take it off and then disconnect the camshaft position sensor wiring from the main engine wiring. After that, take out the distributor rotor and lift the camshaft position sensor assembly from the distributor housing. Carefully align the sensor with the notch present in the distributor housing and then put it back in its position. Fix the wiring harness, fit the rotor back in place and screw the distributor cap down on the mounting screws. Next, put the air cleaner back onto the engine.
