2000 Dodge Caravan Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can a Neutral Safety Switch Be Tested, Replaced, and How Does It Function on 2000 Dodge Caravan?
A: Having the selector lever in either Park or Neutral positions grounded the solenoid circuit by means of the center terminal of the 3 terminal switch. To test the switch, cut off the connector and use your multimeter to check if a connection exists between the center pin and the transaxle body which must be true only in Park and Neutral. Check the shifting system's cable adjustment before repairing a switch that tests as bad. To take out the switch, undo the screws on the transaxle case and let the fluid leak into a container, then set the selector lever to Park and Neutral so the switch operating lever fingers are centered in the switch opening. When installing, screw the switch with a new seal into the transaxle case and ensure the tightening pressure is 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.), test it by using a test lamp once more. Put fluid into the transaxle until it fills to the right mark. The back up lamp switch circuit is linked using the two terminals furthest from each other of the 3 terminal switch. The way to test this switch is by removing the wire connector and touching the two outside pins together which should only provide continuity when the transaxle is in Reverse, with no connection from the pins to the case.
