2000 Dodge Grand Caravan Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Chain on 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Before proceeding with service or repair, take out the negative battery cable and open the chain cover. Rotate the engine to get the timing marks in the right position. Take off the bolt that attaches the camshaft sprocket to the motor and remove the timing chain with the camshaft sprocket. With a suitable puller, remove the crankshaft sprocket after holding the crankshaft still, so the sprocket doesn't turn and damage its surface. When installing, fit a new crankshaft sprocket over the crankshaft and seat it with said tool and a mallet. Make sure the timing arrow on the crankshaft is pointing straight up at 12 o'clock. Spray the timing chain and sprockets with clean engine oil just before placing them. Once you're holding the camshaft sprocket and chain, wrap the timing chain around the sprocket while making sure to line the colored link with the dot. Then, situate the timing arrow at the 6 o'clock position. Clamp the timing chain so the functional part is linked with the dot on the crankshaft sprocket and add the camshaft sprocket afterward. Use a ruler to see if the timing marks are matching. Slide on the washer and bolt for the camshaft sprocket and fasten the bolt by hand until it reaches 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Turn the crankshaft twice to check that the marks are matched; if they are not, take out the cam sprocket and fix the timing. Bring the end play of the camshaft to the right level by upgrading the thrust plate if needed. Also, replace the timing chain cover and then link the negative cable to the battery.
