2000 Dodge Neon Release Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Release Bearing on 2000 Dodge Neon?
A: The first step to fixing or repairing the Clutch Release Bearing is to take the transaxle out of the vehicle. Put the lever and bearing assembly into an up-right position, hold the release lever in the pivot stud socket with both hands and slowly pull to pop off the pivot stud so that you don't damage the spring clip with a screwdriver or pry bar. Lift the fork from beneath the bearing thrust plate, making sure not to hurt the retention tabs holding the bearing. Check the bearing which is already lubricated and sealed, to confirm there is no liquid inside. If your bearing runs quietly and smoothly under slight pressure, but has a slight drag from the lubricant and isn't noisy, then it should be fine to use. If it's difficult or doesn't work properly, change the bearing assembly for a new one. Look at the pivot stud spring clips on the rear of the clutch fork; if they look broken or bent, then you have to change the whole clutch fork. Before fitting the fork, smear a little grease on the pivot ball hole of the fork and also in the fork arms. Put the fork into the bearing so that the bearing's small pins fit over the fork arms. Put the bearing and fork section over the input shaft holder together, snap the clutch fork onto the pivot ball and reinstall the transaxle.
