2000 Dodge Neon CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a CV Boot on the Inner Tripod Joint on 2000 Dodge Neon?
A: You should remove the driveshaft from inside the vehicle before replacing the inner tripod joint seal boot. Remove the big clamp that holds the inner tripod joint boot to the tripod joint housing, then take out the little clamp and boot that join to the interconnecting shaft. Next, slide the boot off the main joint and down onto the interconnecting shaft. Before you remove the spider joint, hold the tripod's rollers to stop them from falling out. Remove the assemblies from the tripod joint housing and also take out the snap ring that holds the spider assembly to the interconnecting shaft. Should the spider be stubborn and not yield over hand, hit the bottom end of the assembly gently, but do not get anything like a brass drift close to the outer tripod bearings. Check and clean the spider assembly, the tripod joint housing and the shaft between them for obvious wear; if there is wear, you'll need to change the driveshaft assembly. Ensure that your brand-new sealing boot is made from the same sort of material as the one you removed from your car. Attach the inner tripod retaining clamp to the interconnecting shaft and then roll the replacement boot over the shaft with its raised bead in place in the gear groove. Attach the spider to the interconnecting shaft by placing its chamfer close to the shaft and pushing in the entire retaining snap ring. Squeeze half of the grease from the package into the housing where the tripod connects and put the other half into the sealing boot. Place the tripod housing above the spider assembly and then move it up and across them both. Hold the seal firmly in place on the shaft, with both edges tight, using Special Tool C-4975-A. Introduce a trim stick between the inner tripod joint and sealing boot, making it is lies flat against the tripod. Put the inner tripod joint onto the driveshaft so the two sealing boots are edge to edge, after which remove the trim stick. Clamp the tripod joint boot to the tripod joint using whichever tool is required for the kind of boot clamp you have. At the very end, reinstall the driveshaft assembly onto the car.
