2000 Dodge Ram 2500 Wheel Hub Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Wheel Hub on 248 and 267 RBI Axles on 2000 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: To work on the wheel hub assembly on 248 and 267 RBI axles, first take off the wheel and tire, then the brakes and remove the axle shaft from the hub. After that, extract the lock wedge and adjustment nut using Socket DD-1241-JD and slide the hub assembly off, taking the outer axle bearing with you. Remove the inner grease seal and, using Installer 5064 and Handle C-4171, take out the grease seal and bearing inside the hub. With a brass drift or another suitable punch, tap the bearing cups out of the center bore. For installing the bearings, first clean both axle bearings and the hub with a recommended cleaner, use Installer 8151 and Handle C-4171 to fit the bearing cups and include lubricant on the bearing cup surface. Put the bearing and grease seal into the hub using the handle and removal tool along with Installer 8149 and Handle C-4171. Look along the contact points between the bearing and seal on the spindle tube of the axle for any irregularities or burrs and then remove them and apply multipurpose, grade 2 lubricant of EP type to the axle. Try not to let the bearing grease seal contact the axle tube spindle threads during installation, to avoid any harm. Place the hub on the axle, put in the outer axle bearing and use Socket DD-1241-JD to tighten the hub bearing adjustment nut to 163 - 190 Nm (120 - 140 ft. lbs.) while rotating the wheel. To get 0.001 to 0.010 inch wheel bearing end play, loosen the nut a little, add the wedge to the spindle keyway and install it in a new location in the nut. Following this, insert the axle shaft, brake drum and wheel and tire together.
