2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on 2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: Begin your work on the oil pan by removing the battery negative cable, oil dipstick and the air cleaner inlet duct. Release the bolt that holds the engine controller into place and transfer it somewhere without unhooking it. After that, get rid of the upper cooling fan shroud fasteners and the engine cover, hoist the car and drain the engine oil. Separate the lines of the transmission oil cooler from the oil pan mounting clip, detach the engine to transmission supports and take off the starter motor and inspection cover for the transmission. Take out the nuts holding down the left and right engine mounts, then remove the nuts from the oil pan and lift out the oil pan, rotating the crankshaft if #1&2 journal counterweight prevents this. For the installation, take four 5/16 x 1 1/2 inch bolts, cut off the tops of the heads and slit the top part for ease of use as dowels. Put the dowels into the cylinder block, coat the gasket guide hole in the cap's corner with Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or something similar, then slide the gasket over the dowels. Set the oil pan in place, aligning it with the dowels and gasket, bolt the oil pan with its bolts and tighten them to 24 Nm (215 in. lbs.). With the dowels out, tighten the pan bolts to 24 Nm and fasten and tighten the oil pan drain plug to 34 Nm. Install the engine mount insulators and their nuts onto the brackets while lowering the engine, secure each nut to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) and reinstall the transmission inspection cover, starter motor and engine onto the transmission support brackets. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines into the mounting clips, then lower the car and put the upper shroud for the cooling fan into place. Install the controller on the cowl, add the air cleaner inlet duct and put in the engine oil dipstick. Fit the engine with oil, link back the battery negative connection, begin the engine and inspect for leaks.
