2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the rear parking brake cable on 2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: The first thing to do for rear parking brake cable service is to release the parking brakes and lift and support the vehicle. Loose the cable holder nut and take out the cables from the tensioner bracket at the back. Disconnect the rear cable clip from the frame bracket, then draw the cable out through it. Push the tabs in along the left cable housing retainer and pull the cable out from the frame bracket side. Take out the right brake cable from its fitting by the brake line and then disconnect the cable retainers from the axle. After that, remove the rear wheels and brake drums, detach each cable from the park brake lever and get rid of the cable guide spring. Push the tabs on both cable housing retainers against the brake support plate and unhook the cables. First, put in the cable guide spring and both of the brake drums when installing. Pull the cable back and slide it into the hole in the brake support plate so that it will be engaged by the park brake lever. Place the cable housing through the brake support plate hole and push until the retainer tabs lock and then pull it to check if it's in place. Attach the correct cable retainers to the axle and push the right cable through the hole on the brake hose bracket. Place both cables in the frame bracket, locking the left cable retainer tabs into place and clip in the retainer for the right cable, remembering the right cable goes in the top hole of the bracket and the left in the bottom one. Connect the cables into both the bracket and connectors and reattach the wheel and tire assemblies after that. Then, adjust the park brake, disassemble the supports and bring the vehicle down.
