2000 Jeep Cherokee Exhaust Pipe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service an Early Build Exhaust Pipe on 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
A: Before touching the early build exhaust pipe, make sure to first raise and support the vehicle. Drench the bolts and nuts with Mopar Rust Penetrant and leave them for 5 minutes. Get rid of the seal only if your car is a 2016 4.0L model, then detach the oxygen sensor connector(s) and the exhaust pipe from the engine. Support the transmission and then take out the rear crossmember. Ease the nuts off the clamp and remove the clamp, applying heat to the exhaust pipe so that the metal becomes cherry red and it becomes easy to disconnect from the catalytic converter. During installation, put the exhaust pipe on the manifold and the catalytic converter together, but do not fasten them tightly yet. Apply a new clamp and set the nut torque to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Link the exhaust pipe to the engine exhaust manifold, add a new seal between them, tighten the nuts to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) torque and you're done. Attach the rear crossmember, tighten all four crossmember to rear plates by 22 Nm and all four crossmember to sill bolts by 42 Nm and balance the transmission platform before you proceed. Put on anti-seize compound, set the sensor in place and tighten the nut to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). After that, place the vehicle low to the ground, run the engine, search for leaking exhaust fumes and check for signs of contact between the exhaust parts and the body panels, fixing them as needed.
