- Q: How to Service and Repair a Catalytic Converter on 2000 Jeep Cherokee?A: When serving the catalytic converter on late build models, you must first raise and support the vehicle. Unplug and remove the oxygen sensor from the catalytic converter, put Mopar Rust Penetrant on the bolts and nuts and wait for 5 minutes. Take out the bolts holding the catalytic converter to the muffler flange, then disconnect the catalytic converter flange from muffler flange and finally remove the nuts and the catalytic converter from the exhaust pipe flange. First, put a gasket on the exhaust pipe followed by the catalytic converter and secure three nuts at this point. After that, line up the muffler flange with the catalytic converter flange, screw in the nuts and bolts and fasten them to 28.5 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). After that, use a torque wrench to tighten the catalytic converter to exhaust pipe mounting nuts to 28.5 Nm or 21 ft. lbs. Add the oxygen sensor to the catalytic converter and connect it. When you have finished, lower the car and start the engine to look for any leaks.
