2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Drive Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Remove and Install a Serpentine Accessory Drive Belt on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: The belt routing schematics are updated with the newest knowledge; when there is a difference between the schematics and the Belt Routing Label found in the engine compartment, trust the label. Connecting your battery cable will allow you to freely remove the drive belt. Be aware that letting the tensioner arm snap back to the free arm may seriously injure the tensioner. Turn the belt tensioner so it meets its stop, then unwrap the belt and slowly rotate it to its free arm position. It's important to check all pulleys during installation and make sure the serpentine accessory drive belt is put on correctly, as wrong water pump rotation can lead to engine overheating. Run the belt around the pulleys, leaving the idler out, then turn the tensioner arm until it stops contacting the end and then put the belt around the idler, guiding the tensioner to rotate into place on all pulleys. When the installation is finished, check the wear indicator; on 4.7L motors, there should be no more than 24 mm (0.94 inches) between the tang and the stop on the housing and on 4.0L engines, the mark should be found between the set minimum and maximum lines. Should the test results show the belt doesn't meet standards, remove and replace it with a new one.
