2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Thermostat Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain Your Thermostat on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: When servicing the thermostat, be sure the radiator draincock is fully closed before you let the pressure and heat out to avoid burns. Drain some or all of the coolant from the radiator to a point that it is lower than the thermostat housing, then use a clean container to collect reusable clean coolant. When working with constant tension hose clamps, get the special clamp tool number 6094 or the Snap-On clamp tool HPC-20 for the bigger units and keep your safety glasses on at all times. Should a constant tension clamp require replacement, it is important to match the stamped number or letter with the original equipment clamp. Take off the upper radiator hose and heater hose from the thermostat housing, disconnect the wire connector at the engine temperature sensor and unscrew the bolts that hold in the thermostat housing, to remove everything and get rid of the old gasket. Before inserting the new thermostat, clean the surfaces where they join, putting the pellet side against the engine and making sure the arrow and air bleed hole on the outer flange are above and in the recess groove. Tighten the thermostat housing with all the bolts secured to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.), taking great care to tighten evenly, avoiding cracks. Join the hoses to the housing of the thermostat and the electrical connector to the coolant temperature sensor. Close the draincock firmly, then add the suitable coolant mixture to the engine's cooling system. After that, power up the engine and make sure there are no leaks.
