2001 Chrysler Voyager Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2001 Chrysler Voyager?
A: First, clear the battery terminal and then drain out the power steering fluid before removing the cap from the reservoir. Hold the vehicle up on supports or a lifting jack and disconnect the wire for the oxygen sensor at its connection to the rear engine mount bracket. You need to remove the catalytic converter first, so take off its four bolts and flag nuts, followed by detaching any isolators or hangers in the exhaust system. Translate the exhaust pipe to the back, lower the front under the crossmember and take out the whole system. Then, take off the supply hose from the pump and empty any surplus fluid and move the heat sleeve on the return hose so you can reach the pump connector to drain out remaining fluid. Drain the entire fluid pressure line and remove extra fluid and take off the accessory drive splash shield. Take out the adjuster nuts found on the rear and front of the power steering pump and then remove the pivot bolt at the bottom. First, remove the belt from the pump pulley. Then, with one motion, remove the front bracket and power steering pump through the opening for the exhaust tunnel. Remove all three bolts from the pump to the front bracket so that the pump can be separated and if it's needed, take off the pulley as well. Install the pump again by reversing the instructions above and secure it in its mounting bracket with the bolts, but don't tighten them when you install it. Add the rear nut after installing the drive belt on the pulley and then tweak it to perfection. Apply 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) torque to the adjustment slot bolts and to the pivot bolt, then insert the accessory drive splash shield again. Before joining the power steering fluid pressure hose, look at the O-ring and replace it if you notice any damage. Hook the power steering fluid pressure line up to the pump fitting, tighten with 31 Nm (275 inch lbs.) and attach the remaining two hoses clear of any accessory drive belts and hose clamps. Slide the protective heat sleeve over the return hose and hold it with a tie strap. Put back the exhaust system, ensure all isolators and hangers are in place and fix the four bolts and flag nuts once more. Join the oxygen sensor wiring harness, lower the vehicle and get the negative battery cable back in place. At last, do the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation to fill the system and remove air and check for any leaks.
