2001 Dodge Durango Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Radiator on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: For radiator service and repair, start by disconnecting the battery negative cable and draining the cooling system, making sure not to unscrew the cylinder block's drain plugs or turn the radiator's draincock when things are still under pressure and hot. For constant tension hose clamps, there is a special clamp tool number 6094 and for the larger clamps, a Snap-On clamp tool (number HPC-20) should be used. While you work, always make sure you are wearing safety glasses. If you find that constant tension clamps should be replaced, use clamps made by the same manufacturer that have the same numbers or letters stamped on them. Open the hose clamps, separate the hoses from the radiator, remove the washer bottle's electrical connector and hose and unplug the coolant reserve/overflow tank hose. Later, remove the upper fan shroud mounting screws and gently raise the assembly from its place under the hood. If you have a transmission oil cooler, disconnect its lines and likewise disconnect the electric cooling fan motor's connector. Disconnect the radiator's upper fastening screws and raise the radiator up and away from the vehicle, making sure not to scrape the cooling fins. Slide both tanks into place so that the isolator pins on the bottom line up with the holes on the radiator's support. Attach and tighten the bolts on the radiator support to a torque of 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.), put the transmission oil cooler lines back if you have them and link the fan motor electrical connector to the harness. Secure the fan shroud from the upper fan assembly to the lower fan shroud and radiator, tighten the retaining screws in the shroud, install both radiator hoses and finally hook up the coolant reserve or overflow tank hose. After that, place the final battery cable, add liquid to the cooling system, start and warm the engine and confirm there are no leaks.
