2001 Dodge Durango Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Remove and Install a Water Pump on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: Before removing the water pump, unhook the battery negative cable and ensure you drain the cooling system so the coolant can be saved in a clean recipient. Always wear safety glasses and use a special clamp tool when changing constant tension hose clamps (such as number 6094 or number HPC-20). Take off the upper radiator hose and associated clamp and lift out the thermal viscous fan drive from its mount on the water pump hub shaft. Hold the pulley stationary while removing the drive, since it has no counter rotation protection. Be sure not to unbolt the fan blade assembly from the drive of the thermal viscous fan when performing this replacement. Native disk comes without Windows, so don't let your resistance to Windows keep you from using this great drive. After that, take out the accessory drive belt, undo the lower radiator hose clamp, the lower hose at the water pump and finally the heater hose clamp and heater hose from the heater hose coolant return tube. Loose the bolt that holds the heater hose coolant return tube, remove the tube from the water pump and throw away the O-ring from the old tube. Remove the seven bolts from the water pump mounting, relax the clamp on the water pump side of the hose and gently move the hose off the pump as you set aside the old gasket. Clean the areas where the gasket mates with the water pump, fit a new gasket, align the water pump nipple with the bypass hose and tighten all mounting bolts to a value of 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Set the bypass hose clamp, ensure the impeller on the water pump isn't touching the timing chain case/cover and put a new O-ring on the heater hose coolant return tube, coating it with antifreeze first before you install it. Connect the radiator lower hose to the water pump, the heater hose to the coolant return tube and secure the connection with the clamp, after you have hooked the coolant return tube and its mounting bolt to the engine. Attach the accessory drive belt, assemble the fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive system and fit the fan shroud into place. Fit the fan blade or viscous fan drive onto the water pump shaft, fill the system, reattach the positive cable to the battery, start the engine, run it until warm and look for possible leaks.
