  • Q: How to Service a Piston Ring Set on 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan?
    A: Take the piston and connecting rod off first, followed by removing the No. 1 and No. 2 piston rings from the piston with a ring expander. After that, separate the upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail and the oil ring expander. During installation, pop up the manufacturers I.D. logo on the rings and add each ring in the proper order: oil ring expander, upper oil ring rail, lower oil ring rail, intermediate ring No. 2 and ring No. 1. Fit the side rail to the piston ring's groove between the expander and the piston, holding it firmly against the expander as you install it, using no piston ring expander. Fit the upper side rail first, the lower side rail second, then place the No. 2 piston ring and lastly install the No. 1 piston ring. Set each piston ring's end gaps correctly and make sure the gap in the oil ring expander is no less than 45 degrees from the rails on the side, but do not place it on the piston pin or in the thrust direction, since this is important for smoother oil control.
