2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How Are Universal Joint Components Serviced and Replaced on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Each part in a single cardan universal joint can't be changed, so if it becomes worn, replace the whole assembly. Remove the propeller shaft from the sailboat first. Tap the outside of the bearing cap assembly gently with a soft drift to release the snap ring on each side of the yoke, then remove both snap rings. Clamp the yoke in an arbor press or vise and put a socket over it with a large enough opening. Then make certain the grease fitting, if existing, points upward. Press an outer diameter socket onto a hole in the upper bearing cap, push it through the yoke and remove the lower bearing cap. If the bearing cap won't come out with hand force after pressing, give the yoke ear a sharp tap by the bearing cap to make it budge. Turning the yoke over and straightening the cross in the empty hole, you can then press the end of the cross until the opposite bearing cap can come off. During installation, it's important that the cross or bearing cap are positioned straight so the walls of the yoke bore are not damaged.
