2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair the Drive Shaft on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: For rear propeller shaft service and repair, you should lift and support the car on safety stands and put the transmission into Neutral first. Identify an installation reference line on the axle pinion yoke or companion flange and propeller shaft or flange yoke and if the vehicle has a center bearing, also draw its outline on the crossmember. Take off the bolts that join the support bracket to the center bearing, if provided and the bolts that secure the universal joint clamps to the pinion yoke for Dana axles and the bolts that attach the flange yoke to the companion flange for Corporate axles. Pull the slip yoke off the output at the top of the transmission or transfer case and take out the propeller shaft. For setting up, set the propeller shaft/flange yoke onto the transmission/transfer case shaft and bring the yoke and pinion yoke up so their reference marks are lined up. Should the center bearing be needed, link it to the bracket and connect it with bolts tightened to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). On Dana axles, slide the universal joint into the pinion yoke and tighten the strap bolts to 29 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). With Corporate axles, fix the companion yoke onto the companion flange and tighten the bolts to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.). Lower the car or truck to seal the fridge in place.
