Q: How to remove and reinstall the intake manifold on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Connect a battery disconnecter to the negative terminal, move the engine cover aside and drain the coolant from the system to remove the intake manifold. After that, get rid of the A/c compressor, generator, accessory drive bracket and air cleaner. Undo the Fuel System Pressure release procedure and then remove the fuel lines. Either unhook or leave in place the accelerator linkage, speed control and transmission kickdown cables if provided and then take out the return spring, distributor cap and wires, coil wires, heat indicator sending unit wire, heater hoses and bypass hose. Take the closed crankcase ventilation and evaporation control systems out, then take out the intake manifold bolts and remove the assembly which contains the intake manifold and throttle body, from the engine area. Do away with the front and rear cross-over gaskets, also toss out the gaskets from the flange and between the throttle body and the plenum, if you have to. Thoroughly clean the manifold in solvent and let compressed air dry it to confirm the front and rear gaskets on the cylinder block are also clean and dry. Check for cracks on the manifold and test its mating surfaces with a straightedge. If you took off the plenum pan, install a new gasket, set it up carefully and bolt it into place using 5.4 Nm (48 in. lbs.) followed by 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.), then check bolts at this tension. Set the flange gaskets so that the vertical port alignment tab fits on top of the block and both side alignment tabs join up with those on the cylinder head gasket, making certain Manifold Side is facing out on each flange gasket. Use Mopar Gen Ii Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or a similar product, at the four corners, spreading a sealant that measures about 5 mm (0.2 inch) in thickness. Put in place the front cross-over gasket first, then a new gasket to fasten the throttle body to the intake manifold. Lower the intake manifold over the cylinder block and heads and make certain the seals have been installed. Add the intake manifold bolts and set bolts 1 and 2 to 8 Nm (72 in. lbs.) each, increasing the tension every time by 1.4 Nm (12 in. lbs.) until both are tight, then secure the other bolts to 8 Nm (72 in. lbs.) as you check they are all at the same level of tightness. Next, put in the closed crankcase ventilation and evaporation control systems and link up both coil wires, the heat indicator sending unit wire, the heater hoses and the bypass hose. Then, mount the distributor cap and link up all the other components, the return spring and the accelerator linkage, speed control and transmission kickdown cables. Fit in the fuel lines, the accessory drive bracket, A/c compressor, generator and drive belt and then connect the air cleaner. Add liquid to the cooling system, fit the engine cover and then connect - to the battery.
