2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Ensure Accurate Alignment for Your Drive Shaft on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: For driveline alignment to be accurate, lift and support the car level on its axles and make sure the wheels and propeller shaft rotate. Before mounting, remove all external bearing snap rings from the servicing kit's universal joint to ensure the platform is level. Turn the shaft all the way until the transmission/transfer case output yoke bearing sits below. Whenever you measure, go front to rear and always use the same side of the vehicle. Fix Inclinometer 7663 (J-23498A) at the yoke bearing, parallel to the shaft, so that the bubble is in the middle of the sight glass and write down the recorded measurement to find the Transmission Output Yoke Angle. Rotate the propeller shaft 90 degrees, stand the Inclinometer on the yoke bearing touching the propeller shaft, line up the bubble and record the angle for the propeller shaft. Take away the smaller angle from the larger angle to get the Transmission Output Operating Angle. Then, turn the propeller shaft 90 degrees, place the Inclinometer on the pinion yoke bearing so it is aligned with the shaft and lines up the bubble to find the Pinion Shaft or Input Yoke Angle. Calculate the Axle Input Operating Angle by subtracting the smaller figure from the larger. There should be good cancellation of angles between the U-joints and each should operate within less than 1° and 3° with a continuous operating angle of at least 1°. Measuring the propeller shaft angles for a two-piece propeller shaft is done in the same manner as for a single-piece version.
