2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How can the Air Bag system be serviced safely and correctly on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: Before working on the air bag system, clear the battery negative cable and wait for two minutes so the air bag capacitor empties. Make sure to use rubber gloves, goggles or safety glasses and a long-sleeved shirt before handling or removing a deployed air bag due to irritants in the pot. Roll the glove box down and remove the large screws at the top that secure the passenger air bag rear bracket to the glove box opening upper reinforcement, as well as the three small screws holding the passenger air bag door lower flange to the same reinforcement. Open the glove box and disconnect the air bag pigtail wire cable that is linked to the instrument panel wire harness. Next, take out the screws holding the passenger air bag front bracket to the instrument panel cross body and then carefully pry the passenger air bag door so the five snap features come apart. The passenger air bag and air bag door can be taken out together as a group. To set up the air bag, place and carefully secure the passenger air bag and air bag door unit onto the lower level of the instrument panel, then turn and tighten each of the two front bracket screws to 8 Nm (75 in. lbs.) and repeat with the big screws at the back. Mount the three small screws in the bottom part of the air bag door with 2 Nm pressure (17 in. lbs.) and position the snaps to fit into the instrument panel base trim contact points. Press on the door to connect the snaps. Connect the passenger air bag pigtail wire back to its connector, secure it so it is locked and close the glove box. After servicing any part of the air bag system, don't connect the negative battery cable back in until the system has been verified.
