2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: Make sure the drive belt is off the tensioner by swinging the tensioner clockwise and pulling the belt from its guide, since the automatic tensioner holds high pressure. After that, unhook the hoses from where they meet the power steering pump, stockpile the hoses, cap the two fittings and then remove the bolts on the bracket to take out the pump assembly. Once that is done, set the pump pulley and bracket aside. Connect the pump bracket to the pump, then secure the bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) for 3.9L & 5.2L engines or 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) for the 5.9L engine. Attach the pulley to the pump first, then install the pump assembly above the engine block and screw in the bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) Before placing the serpentine belt, join the hoses to the pump and hand-tighten the fittings to 35 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). In the end, put power steering fluid alone into the pump reservoir and carry out the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation.
