2001 Dodge Stratus CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a CV Boot on 2001 Dodge Stratus?
A: Before servicing the Constant Velocity (CV) joint boot, take off the big boot clamp that seals the CV shaft to the boot and remove the small clamp that holds the outer boot on the interconnecting shaft. Slide the joint boot down the shaft and use a towel to remove any grease which will reveal the outer CV joint and connecting shaft. Place the interconnecting shaft in a vise with protective covers and then sharply hit the housing end of the CV joint to dislodge it from the circlip; sliding off the outer CV joint may require you to hit it with the hammer. Release the large circlip from the interconnecting shaft before you take off the boot assembly. Clean and look at the ends of the CV joints and the tube; excessive wear means the assembly has to be changed as part replacement is not viable. Slide the sealing boot onto the interconnecting shaft, so that the pear-shaped bead snaps into the available groove. Place the splines of the interconnecting shaft inside those of the outer CV joint, then guide the joint onto the upper shaft end. Use a soft-faced hammer to tap the end of the stub axle through its nut, making sure the cross of the outer CV joint assembly is sitting against the circlip as it moves fully onto the interconnecting shaft. Pour about half of the grease from the seal boot service package into the outer CV joint assembly housing and put the rest inside the sealing boot. Attach the outer CV joint sealing boot to the interconnecting shaft clamp properly, clip the sealing boot on with the crimper Special Tool C-4975-A and make the seal smooth and undistorted by hand if needed. Make sure the sealing boot's retaining groove faces inside CV joint housing, secure the sealing boot onto the outer CV joint retaining clamp and use Crimping Special Tool C-4976-A to lock it completely onto the outer CV joint housing.
