2002 Dodge Stratus CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Outer CV Boot on 2002 Dodge Stratus?
A: For the outer CV joint boot, start by unclipping the major clamp that holds the CV joint sealing boot to the housing and throw it out and then toss the smaller clamp securing the outer boot to the interconnecting shaft as well. With the grease wiped away, position the sealing boot down the connecting shaft. Then, pull the boot off to find the outer CV joint and interconnecting shaft. Slide the protective caps onto the support for the interconnecting shaft and gently hit the housing end of the CV joint with a soft-faced hammer to get it out of the internal ring on the shaft, until the outer CV joint comes off. Get rid of the big circlip on the interconnecting shaft before taking the failed sealing boot off. Look for excessive wear on both sides of the outer CV joint assembly and interconnecting joint; if you find any, the whole driveshaft assembly needs to be replaced because individual parts cannot be serviced. When installing, slide the new sealing boot onto the shaft so the raised bead inside lines up with the shaft's groove. Lie the splines from the interconnecting shaft on the CV cross, match both assemblies and place the cross onto the shaft. Gently tap the stub axle at its end (with the nut set) using a soft-faced hammer, working it until the outer CV joint meets the interconnecting shaft and is pressed against the circlip. Insert half of the sealing boot's grease into the outer CV joint housing and stuff the rest of the grease into the sealing boot. Securely install the sealing boot onto the clamp, then use the C-4975-A Special Tool to cramp it to the interconnecting shaft. Confirm the seal is not dimpled, too tight or out of form and adjust shape by hand if required. The sealing boot must be evenly installed using the Special Tool C-4975-A to the outer CV joint retaining clamp.
