2001 Jeep Cherokee Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Power Steering Pump and What Steps Are Involved for a 2001 Jeep Cherokee?
A: Before servicing the power steering pump, first remove the serpentine drive belt and then disconnect the pump's hoses and drain them. Then, take out the three pump mounting bolts through the pulley openings and begin to loosen the three pump bracket bolts. Lower the pump until it's out of the engine and then remove the pulley from the pump. First, attach the pulley to the pump, set the pump onto the engine and tighten its bolts with a torque of 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Thread on the three pump bolts and tighten them to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) and finally attach both hoses to the pump's ports. Afterwards, replace the drive belt, fill the power steering fluid and do the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation.
