2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Water Pump on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before handling the water pump, detach the negative battery cable and empty out the cooling system. To remove the fan/viscous fan drive assembly, turn the nut holding it counterclockwise, but be sure to not unbolt the fan blade if the water pump needs changing. After that, take out the nuts holding the fan shroud to the radiator and all together disassemble the fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive, ensuring you keep the drive vertical to avoid spills. Release the bolts holding the water pump pulley, slide the belt off the water pump pulley and remove the pulley. Remove the idler pulley on top of the water pump and then un attach the lower radiator and heater hoses from the water pump fitting. Remove the pump using the five pump mounting bolts, being careful of the one that is a bit longer. Should you replace the pump, take the heater hose fitting off and remember its position. Wash the mating part of the gasket carefully and carefully inspect the water pump for potential problems due to cracks, leaks or bearing faults. As you install the heater hose fitting, use Mopar (R) Thread Sealant With Teflon and follow the directions from the package. Rub clean the surface between the gasket and the pump housing, look for any sign of damage, add the silicone bead with the gasket pointing to the water pump, lock on the mounting bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) and make sure the shaft rotates freely. Link the radiator and heater hoses, set the water pump pulley and tighten bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.), then set in the idler pulley and fasten its bolt at 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Tape the serpentine engine accessory drive belt properly to keep the engine from overheating, place the fan blade and viscous fan drive on the water pump, add coolant and inspect for any leaks. Next, rejoin the battery cable, restart the engine and check to see if there are any leaks on the battery.
