2002 Chrysler 300M Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Parking Brake Cable on 2002 Chrysler 300M?
A: Raise the back of the car by placing it on a frame contact hoist or jack stands before handling the rear parking brake cable. Turn the nut that holds the park brake cable tensioner to release tension in the cable. Detach the rear cable from the anchor at the brake cable tensioner and separate the rear cable at the intermediate cable. Let out the retainer clip for the chosen rear park brake cable from the crossmember, then lower the car to a convenient position for working. First, take the rear wheel and tire off the affected side, then remove the brake caliper from the adapter and rotor and finally remove the brake rotor from the hub/bearing assembly. Also, release the parking brake shoes from the disc brake adapter and take out the park brake actuator lever from the rear park brake cable. Squeeze the retainer tabs on the back park brake cable with a screwdriver and then detach the cable from the back of the adapter and from the car. When you install the rear parking brake cable, run it above the intermediate cable, mounting it to the frame, crossmember and stabilizer bar and check that the locking tabs are in place as you secure the other end to the disc brake adapter. Assemble the hand brake lever behind the spring, then fit in the shoes, front disc brake rotor on the hub/bearing and finally the brake caliper onto both the rotor and bracket. Unscrew the caliper guide pin bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.), put the tire and wheel back on and tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Raise the vehicle once more and place the rear park brake cable in the rear suspension crossmember mounting hole. Secure it in place with the new retainer clip. Hook the left rear cable to the park brake cable tensioner and link the right rear cable to the intermediate park brake cable. Also, make sure to adjust both the parking brake shoes and the parking brake tensioner.
