2002 Chrysler Prowler Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Power Steering Pump on 2002 Chrysler Prowler?
A: Before disconnecting the power steering pump, you have to take out its negative cable and isolate it. Pull out all the power steering fluid using a siphon pump. Relieve tension on the serpentine drive belt by giving the tension adjustment bolt an anticlockwise turn, while also loosening the locknut in the idler pulley center on the tensioner. Untwist the hose from the fitting on the power steering pump and take off the whole hose part. Lift the vehicle, take the serpentine drive belt off the power steering pump pulley and save it somewhere safe. Take out the spring clamp from the supply hose and drop the hose out of the pump, so the remaining fluid flows out. Cap the connector at the power steering fluid supply hose before you remove the pump to stop residual fluid from leaking. After removing the power steering fluid pressure and tightening the hoses, remove the three bolts holding the pump to its mounting bracket from the holes in the pump pulley. Take the power steering pump and pulley assembly from the engine's lower section and if any parts should come with you, transfer them to the new pump. When installing, reconnect the power steering pump under the engine and ensure it stays secure with three bolts fastened tightly to 28 Nm or 250 in. lbs. After that, attach the power steering supply hose and its clamp, with the clamp placed past the bead of the pump fitting. Attach the return and pressure hoses from the power steering to the steering gear, avoiding any unpadded parts and tighten their tube nuts to 31 Nm (275 in. lbs.). Attach the drive belt to the pump pulley, lower the vehicle and fix the power steering pressure hose to the pump discharge fitting, turning until the tightness reaches 31 Nm (275 in. lbs.). Place the serpentine drive belt on the remaining pulleys, tension it and tighten the idler pulley's locknut. Reassemble the brake fluid push rod after tightening the bolts. Then, hook up the negative battery cable again. Next, use only Mopar ATF+4 Automatic Transmission Fluid in the power steering system, bring it up to the right level in the reservoir, carry out the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation and check for leaks at all hose connections as you do this.
