2002 Chrysler Town & Country Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable for a 31TH Automatic Transmission on 2002 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: Before servicing or repairing the shift cable on a 31Th automatic transmission, remove the negative battery cable. After that, pull the gear shift cable out of the manual valve lever and away from the upper mount bracket. Take off the lower silencer on the instrument panel and the knee bolster and cut the Prndl cable from the gear shift lever and the gear shift cable from the gear shift lever. Take the gear shift cable out of the column bracket, unplug the grommet from the dash panel and take the cable out of the vehicle. Insert the gear shift cable up through the dash panel and make sure the grommet stays in place. Pass the gear shift cable through the column bracket until you hear a click and then join it to the gear shift lever and Prndl cable, making sure it fits properly. Connect the knee bolster and the instrument panel lower silencer, then link the gear shift cable to the transaxle upper mount bracket, listen for another click and connect the end of the cable to the transaxle manual valve lever.
