2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Wheel Bearing on an AWD on 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Before changing or repairing the bearings, apply the parking brake, bolt the hub nut loose and try to stop the hub and axle from rotating. Lift the car and take out the wheel and its tire. Following this, take out the cotton pin and nut from the outer C/V joint's stub shaft, then remove the spring washer and hub nut along with its washer. Untighten the six bolts of the driveshaft inner joint on the rear drive line module and after that remove the rear wheel speed sensor from the rear bearing. Take the car off the parking brake and unwind the adapter guide pin bolts so you can slip the caliper off; support the caliper to avoid puncturing or distorting the hose. Pull the rotor off the hub/bearing before compressing the inner joint of the driveshaft and sliding the outer joint out to remove it from the rear drive line module and hub/bearing. Unscrew each mounting bolt for the hub/bearing to axle very gently and if it is too tightly attached, tap the disc brake caliper adapter lightly with a soft-faced hammer to separate the hub/bearing. If the hub/bearing is sealed to the caliper adapter, use Special Tool 8214-1 to make removing it easier. With the axle in place, install the hub/bearing, tightening the screws in a pattern that crisscrosses. Tighten them to 129 Nm (95 ft. lbs.). To connect the driveshaft, insert the outer part into the bearing hub/bearing and cob the inner part to the output shaft until it is tight. Install the rotor and lower down the caliper and brake shoes, attaching them to the caliper adapter. Don't over-twist the guide pin bolts, tighten them to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). Coat the threads of the outer C/V joint stub shaft with penetrating oil and clean them, place the washer and hub nut on and reduce the vehicle once everything is installed. Once more, set the parking brake before tightening the middle point on the drive shaft to the drive line module output and tighten the bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Mount the spring washer, nut retainer and cotter pin on the stub shaft and then place the wheel speed sensor and bolt. Once done, tighten the attaching bolt for the sensor to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.). When everything is done, mount the wheel and tire, tighten the bolts that secure the wheel on the hubs in the order required by the maker (with 135 Nm force/100 ft. lbs. torque), lower the car, push the brake pedal a few times to make sure it is firm and drive it to see if the brakes work properly.
