2002 Dodge Intrepid Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install the Shift Cable from a 42LE Automatic Transmission on 2002 Dodge Intrepid?
A: On floor-shifter 42LE automatic transmissions, start by inserting an allen wrench into the gearshift screw and then pull off the gearshift knob. Following this, disconnect the console bezel, remove the duct under the console and take out the three column cover screws. To get rid of the upper section, tip the column forward and for the tilt lever, lift the column to its highest point. After taking off the ignition key, open the lower column cover and slide the interlock cable out of the groove on the lever near the shifter. Unplug the BTSI solenoid from the main body, step on the interlock lock tab and take the cable out of the lock cylinder housing. During the installation process, turn the ignition switch to "ON/RUN" and connect the interlock cable to its previous position. Slide that end of the interlock cable into the lock cylinder housing and as it clicks in place, attach the BTSI solenoid connector. Set the ignition to "LOCK" and push the shift lever to PARK. Guide the cable core wire into the small space below the lever, check that the cable end fits and pull the cable into the shifter housing until it snaps. Park the transmission lever, move the key to LOCK, take out the key and tilt the steering wheel all the way up. Once you have the new interlock cable, open the locking clip, remove the pin and twist the cable into place. When you plan to use the cable again, pull outward on the locking clip and adjust, then tighten it up again. Put the ignition key in to see if the ignition interlock is acting correctly and do any required adjustments if necessary. After that, add the bezel to the shifter console, the gearshift knob, both ends of the steering column, the tilt lever and the lower silencer panel.
