Dodge Intrepid Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Shift Cable in a 42LE Automatic Transmission with a Column Shift on Dodge Intrepid?
    A:
To handle or repair the gear shift cable in a 42LE automatic column shift, first put the vehicle in park and turn off the ignition with the key in "LOCK." After removing the under panel silencer/duct assembly and the column cover screws, lean the column forward to take off the upper half of the column cover. Adjust the column so that it is vertical, pull the tilt lever to unseat it and open the ignition with the key. Then remove the bottom cover of the column. Loosen the cable from the shift pin and remove the black clip from the conduit bracket as you tilt the column all the way upward. Open the hood and, inside, detach the gear shift cable from its bracket, remove the cable grommet near the firewall and pull out the cable through the car. Hoist up the vehicle and take out the fill tube's bracket, then spin the fill tube to get to the clamp holding the shift cable. Take the cable out of the mounting stud, slide it off the routing bracket, unscrew the nut that holds it and finally remove the cable from the shifter at the transaxle. While setting up this line, place the transaxle shift lever in "park" and attach the other end of the cable to it, ensuring you have a washer and screw everything together tightly, until reaching 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Turn the fill tube so it is in its original position and secure the bracket bolt. Put the "push pin" on the cable into the bracket, direct the transaxle shift cable through the dash panel hole, coat the cable grommet with synthetic lubricant and seal the cable neatly into the hole. Insert the cable into the throttle/gearshift bracket, run the gearshift from the left a/c duct to the left lower heat duct upward to the steering column, slowly raise the steering column all the way up and check that the shift lever is in park. Get the transaxle shift cable to the shift cable conduit bracket, secure it with a new clip and fasten the cable to the attaching stud. Move the steering to its lowest position, press the brake, remove the key from the ignition, shift the column shifter to park and twist the cable adjuster in until you hear a click. Reassemble the upper and lower steering column shrouds with the underpanel silencer/duct, then operate the shifter to ensure it's not binding or stuck and that the engine can't be started except when the car is in park or neutral.
