2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install an Axle Shaft on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Raise the vehicle and then loosen the lug nuts and the hub nut after you brake B while the vehicle stays in place. Raise the vehicle next and then take out the wheel and tire together as one. After that, take out the half shaft hub nut, then the brake caliper and rotor. Put a hydraulic jack under the bottom of the suspension arm and lift it to unload the rebound bumper. Disconnect the lower shock absorber bolt and take off the ball joint nut using Remover 8677. Remove the pressure on the axle shaft snap-ring to free the inner CV joint by inserting two pry bars between the CV housing and axle housing and applying pressure on them. After tilting the knuckle, pull the half shaft so that it exits the knuckle, ensuring you don't bend or break the outer CV threads as you remove it. Afterward, take out the half shaft from the vehicle. Clean the hub bearing bore, hub bearing mating surface and half shaft splines and then grease the splines on the axle shaft with a light coating. Attach the half shaft into the knuckle, then into its place on the axle, pushing it to ensure the axle snap ring is pushed into the housing. Position the upper ball joint into the knuckle, add and tighten the upper ball joint nut to the ball joint and follow the manufacturer's instructions. After that, put in the lower shock bolts, install all four rubber isolators and tighten all screws, then mount the brake rotors and calipers. After that, mount the half shaft hub nut and tighten it to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.) and then fit the wheel and tire assembly back in place.
