2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Ball Joint on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: To fix or repair a ball joint, first unmount the tire and wheel, then next uninstall the brake caliper and rotor. Remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle and take out the steering knuckle to continue. Should you have a halfshaft lift, lower it to the side and let it hang out from the axle. Applying extreme pressure lubrication on the turned parts helps these tools serve longer and operate successfully when removing or installing them. Working with special tools C-4212-F (PRESS), 8698-2 (RECEIVER) and 8698-3 (DRIVER), press the ball joint from the lower control arm. During installation, lubricate all the threaded areas of the tools with very strong grease. Press the control arm onto the ball joint, using tools C-4212-F, 8698-1 and 8698-3. After that, put on the boot for the ball joint and evenly secure the ball joint flange with the chisel and hammer in four areas. After you remove the support for the halfshaft, reinstall it if you have it and then put in the tie rod end and steering knuckle into the steering knuckle. If the vehicle is so equipped, tighten the halfshaft nut to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.). After this, finish by attaching the brake caliper and rotor and wheel along with its tire. Make sure the ride height is proper and then do a wheel alignment.
