2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Ensure Accurate Alignment for Your Drive Shaft on 2002 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Make sure the vehicle is supported at its axles as equidistantly as possible before checking the driveline; this is so the wheels and propeller shaft can freely rotate. Begin by taking out any bearing snap rings from outside the universal joint so that the protractor can sit level on the arm. Turn the shaft until the output yoke bearing on the transmission/transfer case is seen at the bottom of the unit. Measure everything from the front to the rear and always choose the same side of the vehicle. Fix Inclinometer 7663 so that it is parallel to the shaft on the yoke, line up the bubble and write down this angle to get the Transmission Output Yoke Angle. Afterward, rotate the propeller shaft 90 degrees so the Inclinometer on the yoke is parallel to the shaft with the bubble centered and take a note of the measurement to see the Propeller Shaft Angle. The Transmission Output Operating Angle is obtained by subtracting the smaller value from the larger value. Then, rotate the propeller shaft 90 more degrees and center the bubble in the Inclinometer on the pinion yoke bearing. That angle is the Pinion Shaft or Input Yoke Angle. With the greater number on top and the smaller down bottom, do the difference to receive the Axle Input Operating Angle. Be sure that U joint cable motion is less than 1° at the joints, operate the cables less than 3° at any angle and ensure the U joints can continually move a minimum of 1/2 degree. Measuring the propeller shaft angles on a two-piece shaft is done in the same way as for a one-piece shaft.
