2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Brake Disc Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the Brake Disc on 2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: To work on the brake disc, first lift the car and support it and then remove the wheel and the tire. After that, separate the caliper to check that the brake hose does not hold it up. Remove the steering knuckle bolts with the caliper adapter and get rid of the adapter. First, remove the grease cap, then the cotter pin, nut lock, nut, washer and outer wheel bearing and finally the disc off the spindle. For installation, look at the wheel bearings and add new grease if they seem worn and install the grease seals only if you removed the inner bearing. Whenever you notice problems with the tone wheel on a car equipped with ABS, install a new hub and disc since the tone wheel cannot be serviced separately. Slide the hub/disc onto the spindle and afterward, insert the outer wheel bearing, washer and retaining nut. Rotate the hub/disc as you tighten the nut to 41 - 54 Nm (30 - 40 ft. lbs.), then stop and let undoing the nut unwind the bearings. Loosen the nut, install the lock and fasten it with new cotter pin. Between 0.25 and 0.076 mm (0.001 - 0.003 inch) is the desired thickness for the end play. Rinse the cap in clean water, apply some wheel bearing grease inside and place it back. Attach the caliper adapter by tightening its bolts to 176 Nm (130 ft. lbs.) on your LD 1500 and 285 Nm (210 ft. lbs.) on an HD 2500 or HD 3500 model. Cover the holes with the caliper and tighten the bolts to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.). Afterward, put the wheel and tire assembly in place, lower the car, apply the brakes numerous times to level the brake shoes and check that the brakes are firm before driving.
