How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft Seal with the Timing Case Cover Installed on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The front crankshaft oil seal should be serviced and repaired with the timing case cover attached. Begin by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery, then remove the serpentine drive belt, vibration damper and shroud from the radiator. Extricate the seal by gently pulling on it, but take care to clean the seal bore when the seal is out. Place the new oil seal inside Timing Case Cover Alignment and Seal Installation Tool 6139, with the open end turned inwards and coat the outside diameter of the seal with Perfect Seal or a similar product; additionally, coat the crankshaft with engine oil. Put the tool and seal over the crankshaft end and use Seal Installation Tool 6139 with a draw screw tool to tighten the nut against the cover. Apply a very light layer of engine oil to the damper hub contact surface of the seal after you have removed the tools. Then, put silicone rubber adhesive sealant in the keyway of the crankshaft and insert the key. After you put in the key, install the damper, then add the serpentine belt and shroud over the radiator and hook the negative cable back to the battery.
